We had planned on missing Goa out from our travels altogether, but we had to change trains here so we thought we might as well stay for a night or two and see what it's like. And we're glad we did. Paniji is a really nice city, all the buildings dating back to the Portuguese rule which only ended in 1961. It feels more like Europe than India.
We went to Old Goa today, which was the capital of Goa before Paniji took over in the 19th century. It was all very nice, but there's no town to see at all, just 5 or 6 massive churches and a bunch of restaurants set up to cater for the tourists. One of the churches was being redecorated. Needless to say, the workmen weren't adhering to the "Silence Please" notices at the entrance. They were climbing up, down and across makeshift scaffolding, passing joists and paint across to each other, barely hanging on all, amazing to watch. I suppose it's probably good luck in some weird way to die in a church? They didn't seem too worried about it.
