We've had a great start to our BIG adventure!  Washington has offered a great introduction to our trip and the American way of life.

The TV weather report succinctly described the weather... HOT!  Our first day was 97F (or 36C) and very humid.  These conditions did help create a fantastic thunderstorm on the morning of our second day.  Great whilst we were at the hotel... not so great when we were sheltering under a tree later that same day!

Washington is a great city to wander around, 'The Mall' (think long rectangular park rather than shops!) offers the Capitol at one end (the one with the dome), the Washington Memorial (aka 'the big needle'!) in the centre and the Lincoln Memorial at the far end.

We have spent endless hours in Smithsonian Museums.  Being the naive tourists that we are, we thought that the Smithsonian was one big museum but in reality it is a collection of about 11 museums all centered around the Mall.  Entry to all the museums is free and they are amongst the best museums we have ever visited.  The Natural History one was a favourite and included us pulling crazy faces in front of many an animal.... all for your entertainment :o)

So far we are achieving our main objective for this trip.... to enjoy every minute... and not to get 'super-sized' whilst in America!

We thought we'd include a section in our blog called 'Only in America'... this will include a variety of things that make us smile... or wonder... along our travels.
The first thing that showed how Americans are 'adapting' to their increasing waistlines is our shower curtain.... instead of being a straight rail, it is bowed in shape away from the bath to create ample space for those people on the larger side of life whilst they have their shower!
