Show trip route
We were knackered having not slept since Thursday night, but we managed to go out for drinks and food on the main drag where the backpacker bars etc seemed to be. Its was the first time we'd seen the sex tourism scene as prominent as it is here...and its also the cheapest we've ever seen food and drink (swings and roundabouts!). We paid about £1.50 for noodle soup and 50p for a bottle of beer. Price of blow jobs are, as yet, unconfirmed.
On Sunday we went to the war museum. The military hardware on show is impressive (US planes, tanks, choppers etc), all of which the Viet Cong shot down/claimed during the conflict. We really struggled however with the photographs of the conflict. They were really graphic. Most of them were taken by journo's who died during the conflict
After that, we went to the Ben Thanh market. Celia bought a "mulberry" handbag and matching purse for £20 odd quid. Our bartering skills did us proud. I bought some undies, which were too tight. I'm an extra large over here! C got some Raybans for £3. I also got a vest for a quid.
We haven't mastered the food yet. we keep ordering bland stuff whereas everyone sat near us seems to have picked better stuff! hope that improves.
Its really hot, like 90 odd, but not sunny all the time. As a result, and for the first time, C wants to drink beer! its funny!
What has struck us is the size of Saigon. You can drive for half an hour and seemingly still be in the city centre. Every corner has a bar, café, food stall, market..paint shop, bank, its mental. Also, all the locals seem to live their lives on their doorstep, which is also where they do business They are either selling something, or eating something...always with their families (babies and dogs included)...its really nice to see
The traffic is bananas. Unless you walk out in front of the motorbikes, cars and busses (and hope that they swerve) then you wont cross the road. Its a real test of nerve, which we've done well with so far.
We will fill you in re Monday asap, and tomorrow (Tuesday) asap. We are going up the Mekong River all day, on a tour, so we have started our malaria tablets today.
In short, we are fine. Hope you all are too.
