Where I stayed

Athens was relaxed, the people were friendly and helpful. The back streets where we stayed were lined with citrus fruit growing along the sides of the roads. Even though in the news poor Greece is up there with one of the highest unemployment rates in the EU and the city is in a very pre-rejuvenation state with alot of buildings abandoned and in a state of disrepair, it still has its tourists, with history and culture to share and it's people.

After Rome we are a little "ancient ruined" out but we have been looking forward to Athens and its awesome sights. Once again it is another multicultural city full of people of all cultural backgrounds. They are able and willing to communicicate in English with you even if your Greek is "stinky".

We spent the first day and a half recovering from our travels and then spent the next four days looking around at our leisure. Packed with tourists as you would imagine, alot of US college and High School students on Spring break around, in school groups and tours.

Getting into Greece was pretty good, we took a ferry from Bari to Patras. Then the bus and train to Athens. But getting out of Greece was another thing. We knew we could get to Thessaloniki from Athens and according to the Eurail guide information we could get to Sofia, Bulgaria. But do you think we could find someone or an open office that could confirm this, nah ahh! We think with the economic issues alot of their infrastructure has breakdown so services and office hours have been reduced so travelling in Greece and getting the right information and directions can be pretty frustrating but we still love being here with Greek people, they are just experiencing difficult economic hard times. We finally found an office that opened at 6.30 last night that could sell us tickets to Sofia departing at 11.00pm. We arrived at 4.30 this morning into Sofia and once again sunk into our bunk beds very relieved.
