We had decided to go over the border to Canada before we headed out of Niagara Falls. Our first glimpse of the gorge, we couldn't believe we had arrived there. Across the river was the Canadian flag and just the deep drop separating the two countries. We we then entered the actual park area it was magnificent with the spray, the mist, the force of the flow and then just the inevitability that it would just plunge down into the gorge, plus there were rainbows, it really was breathtaking and up there in "immenseness" with Moab in Utah. It was sad to leave such a brilliant sight behind.
We ended up on an 8 hour detour through Ontario. We were abit disappointed at the view we got for the whole of the 8 hour drive but hey we got our passports a Canadian stamp and I am sure there are other beautiful spots in Canada, though Niagara Falls was pretty breathtaking.
We drove through the night just to try and make Salem for Halloween, we had a DVD player in the back, a gps and my iPod shuffle plugged in so between Andrew and I we were able to drive into Salem very early Tuesday morning. We missed the Halloween celebrations but we managed our own twilight tour of Salem when we arrived and then finished sleeping in a Walmart car park like the homeless Australians we are.
Salem is place full of history and interest. Watched a couple of tourist movies about Salem and the Witch trials. We visited the cemetery where the witch trial victims were apparently buried and some other places of interest. Plenty of kooky and loosely related supernatural businesses in Salem. It is not a little isolated town in Massachusetts as you would imagine, it is like an outer suburb of Boston. But another iconic place ticked off our list.
Drove to the Cape Cod area Tuesday afternoon and we spent the day Wednesday on the Beaches at the end of the pointy end of the Cape Cod area in Provincetown. I started picking up rocks along th beach, but I had to stop myself before I ended up with a backpack full of rocks, so I took some photos of the rocks but still have too many in my bag.
Heading back through Boston today and we will try to make it down to Washington DC .
Will try and add later to this and add photos when I get the kids computer.
