Our plan for day 2 was to ride from Harpers Ferry to Hancock, MD – 63 miles point-to-point, but 70 miles after factoring in the ride to the trail and then another 5 miles past the town to the campground. Our second day on the C&O started with a pancake breakfast at our campsite, followed by a great downhill ride to the trail (the reverse of the climb described on day 1). The ride itself was largely uneventful until the end, which was a positive.
Jumping right to the excitement for the day: after riding 65 miles and approaching the town of Hancock, the girls were feeling pretty good about themselves and were in good spirits. My understanding was that the campground was close to the path, and in Hancock. However, once we arrived in Hancock, I was informed that we still needed to ride to the far end of town, and that the campground was actually 5 miles away. Upon hearing this, Katelyn became furious with me, really fueled by her exhaustion. I tried to explain that it will make tomorrows ride shorter, but she wanted to hear nothing about this! So, we rode 4 miles with Katelyn grunting all the way, and me feeling guilty and telling her how proud I am for what she has done.
As if it couldn't get any worse, after 4 miles there was a sign for the campground that led us into the woods and up a steeper dirt hill than we faced at Harpers Ferry. I seriously could not believe it, but we all got off our bikes and started to climb. Katelyn was so upset that at one point she lost her balance and fell in the rocks, her bike on top of her. Madison was looking on in disbelief, and being tired herself let out a little chuckle which led to Katelyn becoming hysterical. I dropped my bike and carried Katelyn away to calm her down, and to her credit she did regroup. About a quarter of a mile later the campground appeared out of the woods like the sky opening up after a big storm and the sun shining through. What a welcome sight after such a terrible end to the day!
At dinner we actually had a good laugh telling Xiu about the end of the ride, especially considering how well the first 65 miles went! The girls ended the day going to the pool and swimming as if they had not done the ride at all, and we all slept well after a second 70 mile day!
