June 22 - by Madison

Today we went to Canyonlands National Park in Utah. This is one of the 2 national parks (Canyonlands and Arches) near Moab, Utah.  I was very excited to see Canyonlands because I was expecting a canyon sort of like the Grand Canyon.   I was also expecting a bunch of arches since this park is right next to Arches National Park.  When we got to the park we went to the visitor center to get our junior ranger books, but in front of the visitor center we saw a ranger program happening so we joined it. As we approached the program we noticed that the people sitting there were the same people that we met in Zion!  I thought that it was funny that we met them again because they were going to leave Canyonlands right after the ranger program.  At the program I learned that you can tell if an animal is a prey or predator by looking at its eyes.   You can tell by looking at the location of the eye; if the eyes are on the side of the head it is a prey because the animals need to see if their predators are coming so they don't get eaten, and it is a predator when the eyes are in the front part of the head because this allows the predator to know exactly how far away their lunch (or dinner) is.  After this program we went on 2 hikes to see some special features in the canyon.  The first hike that we went on was to an arch called Mesa Arch.  When we got to the arch I noticed that there was a mesa behind the arch. I thought that this was really pretty because the arch acted like a picture frame for the mesa.  After we finished this hike we went on another hike to see a big ditch in the ground.  I learned that this wasn’t just a big ditch in the ground, but it was formed by a meteor (that is what scientists hypothesize).  I thought that this looked really cool because it was 1/3 of a mile in diameter, and when I looked at the hole I was glad I wasn’t there when it happened!  After we left the meteor hole we went to the campground and went to bed.  I hope that Arches will be as great as the arch that we saw today, and I hope that I am not going to meet a meteor!

Girls - Now that you have been to so many canyons, do they start to look the same? Dad and I were in Moab for a few days before Madison was born. I remeber the beautiful hikes and the beautiful colors. Have fun! Love you.
