Today we left Bryce Canyon and drove to Capitol Reef National Park
Today I woke up pretty disappointed because we didn't go to Fairytale Point for Sunrise. When I asked Dad why we didn’t go, he said that we went to bed too late, and we would have been too tired in the morning. When dad woke me up, he already drove to Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and he told me to do the JR Ranger book so that we could get our badges and finish the drive. We finished our JR ranger books in a flash, and I am really glad that I did the JR Ranger book because when we finished, we got a police badge instead of a park ranger’s badge.
When we finished the JR Ranger books we kept on driving to Capitol Reef when we got there, we got our JR Ranger books. While I did the book I learned that Capitol Reef got its name because the Capitol building has a dome on the top of it and there are domes in the rocks here. That is how it got the capitol.
It got reef because this National Park is in the middle of nowhere, and all of the sudden there was a great big barrier that rose up out of the ground like a reef. After we worked on our JR Ranger books we went to our campsite and picked apricots.
Then, we went to a ranger program on bighorn sheep. I learned that their horns can weigh 30 pounds. Another fact that I learned was that there used to be to be two million sheep in Utah and when the Mormon settlers came here there were almost no more!! June 21 - by Madison
Today we spent our last day in Capitol Reef National Park on the most famous hike here, Hickman Bridge. Once we got to the trailhead we found out that the camera case was missing, so we had to look for it for about 30 minutes. After we found the case we started the hike. I was a little bit disappointed because we were starting the hike in the middle of the day, so it is going to be at the peak temperature. On the hike we saw 2 natural bridges. They were smaller than the most famous one here, but I thought that they were very pretty because I could see the colors in them. Also, because they were so short that I could touch the top. Once we were done looking at these bridges we hiked to Hickman Bridge. This bridge was formed by the flashfloods that happen every year. I also think that it was formed by acid rain, and acid rain is polluted rain.
I really liked this bridge because it was so big, and there were black and white stripes on it. I took a little nap in the shade while my Dad, Katelyn, and Emma explored around the bridge and took some pictures. After we took our pictures we went to a point in the park called Petroglyph Panel. When we got there I saw some really clear petroglyphs, and my favorite were the figures that looked like Martians and big horned sheep. I really liked these because they were so clear and they looked like something somebody carved yesterday. After we left this part of the park we went back to the campground to have lunch and rest.
After this we went to a ranger program on the geology about this place. I learned that there were hard rocks on the bottom of the canyon and soft rocks on the top of the canyon. There was a big uplift that lifted one of the hard rock sides, which would make the soft rock crack. This didn’t happen and the soft rock formed with the earth because it was soft and bendable, and this causes the hills that are here. After this ranger program we went back to the Visitor Center and got our junior ranger badge. Then we went to the RV and got ready for an astronomy program. At the Astronomy Program we saw Mars and Saturn, but I thought that the telescope at Bryce was better because it had a better zoom.
Even though the telescopes weren’t the best, I thought that I saw a lot more consolations here because the ranger was showing them to me. My favorite part of the astronomy program was seeing a shooting star. I looked up into the sky and I say a very bright light shooting across the sky. This was my first time seeing a shooting star, so this was really special. After the program (we had to leave early because Emma was tired) we went back to the RV and went to bed. I saw and did a couple of things that were really exciting.
