May 29 – by Madison

Today we went to Petroglyph National Monument in New Mexico. I was really excited to go here because I like petroglyphs and I like to study them to see what they mean.  On the way to the visitor center we were looking at 4 or 5 birds that were running really fast.  After we started looking at them we realized that they were road runners!   I was excited because we have been looking for road runners this whole trip and we have only seen 1 road runner that was running across the road.   Luckily my dad had is camera and got some good pictures.  When we got to the visitor center we got our junior ranger book and we also learned about the petroglyphs. I learned that the petroglyphs were made by the Native Americans from this area about 500-600 years ago.  Another fact is that Petroglyph National Monument didn't become a national monument until 1990!  I thought that this was really amazing because before 1990 anybody could have stolen the rocks or colored all over them.    We decided to drive to a trailhead that is 2.2 miles long and contains over 600 petroglyphs.  I was excited to do this hike because I would be able to study them and probably see a variety of petroglyphs.  Luckily, a ranger gave us a sheet of paper that would help us find the big and interesting petroglyphs, because some of them were tough to see.   I was expecting to see petroglyph after petroglyph, but we didn’t!  We had to search for them, and this was not at all what I was expecting.  I was disappointed that this is what we had to do, but you can’t change history or nature.  My favorite petroglyph was a man in a party with a mask and bird feathers as a decoration.   After this hike, we went on a shorter hike to see more petroglyphs.  I didn’t like this hike so much because we didn’t see as many petroglyphs, but my favorite petroglyph looked a lizard eating a lollipop.  After this hike we went back to the visitor center to get our junior ranger badge.  Then we drove to the campground ate dinner, did a little bit of IXL and then went bed. I had a fun day exploring the Petroglyphs.
