April 26 – by Katelyn

Today we went to Saguaro National Park

Today was a great day. I woke up pretty late and we had pancakes.   Then we drove 45 minutes to a bike store because we had to get a new bike rack to replace our broken one.  Then we drove to Saguaro National Park.  At Saguaro National Park I learned so much.  One really interesting thing that I learned was that the Saguaro cactus can live 150-200 years. Another cool thing that I learned was it takes 10 years for a Saguaro cactus to grow 1 inches!  The last two interesting things that I learned here were that the saguaro cactus gets his first flowers when it is 35-40 years old, and I also learned that the saguaro cactus gets its first arm when it is 85-90 years old! At the park I got my JR Ranger book and we went on a scenic drive where there were stops for you to get out on.  While we were on the drive saw so many cactuses, but on one of the signs I saw a picture of what it looked like in 1933, and I felt like what I was seeing today is so bare.   I felt this because in the picture there were so many more cactuses in 1933, which made me sad.  A little bit into the drive we went on a hike to learn more about why many of the Saguaros have died.  On the hike I saw a lot more of the desert.  I learned that if it is cold for 20 hours a saguaro cactus can die.  When I learned this I was so amazed because that is all that it takes for a plant that can live up to 200 years to die.  After the hike we drove to the Visitors Center to get our JR Ranger books.  On the drive I spotted a Gila Monster, which is a poisonous lizard that is really hard to find.  I also saw a Gambel's Quail but that ran across the road so fast that I barely got to see it.   Once we got to the Visitors Center, I got pricked by a cactus when I was walking in.  That hurt so much because it was like an arrow and that made it torture to get out.  The prickles were about 2 centimeters, and I got about 25.  Once we got to the visitors center we got our JR Ranger badges.  Then we got our bikes from the bike store and we drove to a Chipotle to eat dinner.  Next we drove to our campsite took a shower and went to bed.  Today I had a great day!!

April 27 – by Emma

Today I woke up and ate breakfast.  Then we went to the other side of Saguaro national park. When we got to the visitors center we watched a movie about the park. We learned that the Indians believe that if you stay there till sunset, you can see faces and families of the ones that were here (and died) before us. We also played a quiz game with the ranger at the Visitor’s Center, and we got a lot of the questions right so we got a prize.  Then we went in the RV, and we did a hike.  On first hike I got pricked by cacti under my fingernail, and it hurt a LOT.   Then we went on a second hike. On that hike we saw pictographs that were 2,000 years old!  People think that it is ancient graffiti, but I think that it is much prettier than graffiti.  Nobody knows exactly what they mean, but people guess.  My favorite one was a spiral.   I think it means people come together, and have a good time.  That hike was only .5 miles.  Then we went in the RV, and drove to a Target on the way back to our campground.  I got a water squitter so I can squirt Madison the next time we are in a pool.  Finally, we drove to our campsite. When we got there we ate dinner, took a shower, and watched a movie. Then we went to bed after a very long day!
