Today we went to Big Bend National Park in Texas. My Dad got up and then drove us there early in the morning. When we got there we went to the visitor center to get our junior ranger books.
When we were done getting all the information on the park and what we should do we went to a place called Doughout Wells. Here we had a picnic and then we went on a short hike. On the hike I learned that depending on the way that coldblooded animals lay in the sun they absorb different amounts of sun to give them energy in the morning. When we were done the hike we went to the Hot Springs.
We had to drive to a parking place right outside the Hot Spring area because RV's weren't allowed to drive the rest of the way because they wouldn’t be able to handle the roads. When we got to the Hot Springs I thought that it was a little bit mellow dramatic because everyone was telling us that it was so great and that we should go there, but all it looked like was a little tiny square with algae on the sides.
Right next to the Hot Spring was the Rio Grande River; we liked swimming here because it was colder than the air, which was about 90 degrees outside. We swam here for about 5 minutes and then we went to the RV campground. When we got there we played with bubbles and then we went to a nice place to see the sun set…and this is where bad things happened! We took pictures of the sun set for a while and then my dad went inside to get a lens and he left his camera on his tripod right at the edge of a cliff.
When he comes out of the RV I heard him gasp. I turned around and the last thing I saw were the legs of the tripod go over the cliff. My Dad ran down to the part of the cliff where the camera was and then we found out that his lens was broken. He brought the camera and tripod back up and then a guy from Mexico came and talked to us.
He was doing illegal things to get money. When we left we went back to the campground and then we watched the stars on top of the RV. While we were watching the stars we saw mars, and a coyote walked right past the RV below us. The coyote was strolling down the road in the middle of the campground.
When we were done star watching we went into the RV and then we went to bed. I had a fun day. Comments added by Dad: The camera experience really starts a string of bad luck for us over the coming week. I never thought that a gust of wind would take the camera, but that is exactly what happened. When I saw it go over, I thought it was gone. However, as luck would have it, it fell onto a ledge about 30 feet down, and I was able to recover it. The lens was shattered, and the camera was scratched up, but working. April 17 - by Katelyn
Today we went on a hike to Balanced Rock
Today I got up and we drove to the Visitors Center. At the Visitors Center I got my JR Ranger pin and badge.
After that we went on I hike to Balanced Rock. On the hike I saw a lot of cactuses and I saw a ton of really pretty and big rocks. I also saw a lot of really colorful lizards that were really pretty.
Once I got to Balanced Rock dad took a lot of pictures with me and the rock. Balanced rock is a rock that is balanced on top of two other rocks.
After that we went a little bit further up the trail I saw another big Rock that I stood on. While I was standing on the rock I had a beautiful view of the mountains. On the way back from the hike Madison and Emma ran up ahead and got lost because they turned around and went on a different path.
After Dad and I found them we went back to the RV and drove to a little overlook and we ate dinner. Next we went to a scenic viewpoint to watch the sunset.
During the sunset I went inside of the RV because there were too many biting flies. After that we drove to our campsite and went to bed. I had a pretty good day. April 18 - by Emma
Today I woke up, and ate eggs for breakfast. They we were really good. Then we went on a hike into Santa Elaina Canyon.
On the hike I felt like the sun was evaporating all my vitamins, and I felt really weak. On the hike I liked all of the cliffs because they gave off some shade. I really liked the squishy mud because it felt cold on my hand. On the way back I was building a clay pot with the clay I got today.
When we got back to the place where the ground was cracking we got a piece of clay. Then when we were back at the RV we drove to fort Davis. On the ride I was sneaking cheerios in the back. My Dad wasn’t happy with us when he found out! Then when we got there we went to the playground because we had to burn of the Snickers bar that my dad just gave us. We mostly played tag.
Then we went back to the RV. There we took a shower, and then ate dinner. Next we did math on IXL. By the time I was done IXL I was pooped! Then I went to bed.
