Today we were in Badlands National Park in South Dakota. I learned that they named it Badlands because it is hard to survive and there little water, few plants, few animals, and it is HOT! In the night there are bad storms. I also learned that this weather causes 1 inch of the Badlands to erode every year!
When we woke up we did two hikes. The first hike was short and easy. I didn't think it was worth doing the hike because at the end all we could see was the road, cars, and a little bit of the badlands. The second hike was better. We saw some frogs and toads swimming in some dirty water. There was a big wooden latter that we had to climb. It was steep and scary! When you got to the top you had to be careful because there were really steep cliffs, and it was easy to slip on the loose gravel. I was climbing on rock and the rock that I was holding broke off and I was worried for that one second. I lost my footing and my Dad had to come and rescue me.
When we got to the end of the hike we saw a really pretty view. You were higher than on the first hike and you could see more things. On our hike back, Madison fell and got bruises and scratches on her thigh. When we got back to the RV we drove to the Visitors Center and got our Junior Ranger badges. We also dropped off our postcards.
We went back to our campsite and I sat outside and drew a picture of the badlands. We ate dinner outside and I didn't like it very much because a bug flew into my cucumber and ketchup. We then went to a Ranger program, but it was canceled because a big storm came. We ran back to the RV, and there was a big lightning storm while we went to bed.
