Redwoods National Forest, California

Today I woke-up and we were going to the Redwoods National Forest.  This forest is important because it has some of the tallest trees in the world.  Redwoods are really tall trees, and when they fall they act as nurse logs to allow new plants to grow.  All of these plants then make homes for animals.

On our way to the forest, we saw a bunch of people on the side of the Klamath Bridge.  We decided to stop to see what was there.  When we got out of the RV and got over to where everyone was looking, we saw a 50 foot grey whale!   We asked the police why the whale was there and he said that she had her calf up the river and then nursed it for 1 month.  The calf went to the ocean, but the mother won't leave the fresh water like they usually do.  They tried many things to try to make her leave.  First they tried using boats to push her out.  Next they used killer whale sounds to scare her out. Finally, they used grey whale sounds to try to lure her out.  She kept swimming around in circles and rising up to the surface and diving down.  When she comes up, she blows water out of her blowhole.

When we finally got to the Redwoods forest, we found a nice trail to hike.  My dad said he thought we would not want to stay long once we saw a redwood, but we wound up staying all day.  When we hiked into the woods about a mile, we found a really cool fort made to of dead trees.  We made a camp here and creates a secret code.  My dad hiked in the area while we played for 4 hours.  We then continued to hike and explore some new hiding places.

We all agreed that the redwoods are very important, but also very fun.  We all wish that we had these trees in our backyard!
