Today we started the 'famous' Oregon Coast drive which heads down about 300 miles of Oregon coastline on HWY 101. Starting in Astoria, we have about 130 miles planned to Newport, Oregon. We actually started much later than intended because the girls were having so much fin at the KOA in Astoria, so I opted to stay until we had to leave.
The first 30 miles of the drive was generally off the coast, and very hilly. There were many bikers making this same trip, as this is a popular bike route in the west. The girls because quickly bored, and I could feel their reaction of 'oh no, more mountains.' I assured them that we were on the coast, and we would be seeing the ocean!
Our first stop was in the town of Tillamook, which is famous for their cheese factory.
Tillamook also makes pretty good ice cream, which they were selling faster than the cheese. We all got one, stacked onto their fresh made waffle cones or dishes, which were arguably even better than the ice cream! I couldn't resist overpaying for a 'peace, love, cows' tie-dyed shirt for Katelyn. She loves cows so much, and it supports her vegetarian lifestyle. She told me it cost too much, but I told her it was okay!
As we continued the drive to Newport, the drive became nicer and more scenic as we passed a bunch of small coastal towns. It was getting late in the afternoon, so we did not stop until we approached a real neat area called Devils Punchbowl where the ocean crashes into a very picturesque cove. Just south of this, we also stopped at Beverly Beach, which had amazing soft sand and 3-4 foot dunes. It was quite cool, and we were told only a sample of that we will see as we continue south.
We finally made it to Newport at about 7pm. I grilled dinner while the girls took a short walk to the pier to see what people were fishing for. Actually, it was crabbing, not fishing. Crabbing is big here, and they catch very large Dungenous crabs. The girls all want to try, so I will see what we can do in the days that come!
We had dinner and the girls were in bed at 9:30.
