Hey all,
Well we arrived in Greymouth after the Trans Alpine. It was absolutely amazing. We basically went from a huge flat plain (the Canterbury plain) into the Southern Alps. The change was startling - even better than all the photos we saw. Then to top it all off we went through a tunnel at the top of the pass and when we came out we entered into a rainforest valley - WOW.
It was 4 1/2 hours long but there was so much to look at you didn't see the time going in. When we did get to Greymouth we checked into what turned out to be the best hostel we've stayed in so far in NZ. It was called Global Village and it had an African theme -really funky place and so relaxed. They baked us home made chocolate muffins that night and even laid out tea, coffee and toast for us the next morning. They had free bikes so we took them down to the harbour wall which has some really violent waves hitting it (as we saw from the memorials of the people who died there).
Spent the evening relaxing and so stayed in (albeit with a carry out).
