Nearly missed the bus coz we slept in to 7.00 am - yes that's right - slept in!
Got the Interislander Ferry across to Picton - really smooth and picturesque. Then nearly missed the bus to Kaikoura coz we were still hungover (resisted the temptation of the bar on the boat - hair of the dog). Got the coach in Picton to Kaikoura. The drive was class. We drove through all the vineyards of Marlborough and the top of the Kaikoura range of mountains - stunning. Again the bus driver was really informative. He told us that the name Kaikoura comes from 2 Maouri words - 'Kai' = food and 'Koura' = Crayfish. Booked into the Dolphin Lodge Hostel.
Big on Crayfish here obviously. Also there is a huge deep sea ridge just off the coast of Kaikoura which means there is plenty of marine life including whales and dolphins. Couldn't get on the whale watching trip coz we were too late (bummer). Great location here. The mountains just behind the town are stunning.
Headed out that night to an Irish Bar (Strawberry Hill) and met the local dog (or should we say horse - he was bigger than Tracy) called Zin. He was an Irish Wolfhound mixed with something else - not sure. He's named after Zin Zan Brooke (Rugby).
Finished off pretty drunk so we cant remember much else...sorry.
