Up early to get the bus to Byron Bay. Got speaking to Ann from Wales who was heading that direction too. She bought a fishing rod and we all decided to go fishing later that evening. On the way we saw some beautiful purple trees and found out they were called Jackaranda and originated from India.

Waited at the bus stop for the YHA hostel to pick us up and ended up getting a lift from another hostel. The girl driving was lovely and she even gave us a quick tour of Byron. Witch at reception checked us in and our room smelled like a cat had been living in it for weeks. Told her the room was rank and she said 'oh yeah the new carpet (no way it was new) has just been put down and we're waiting for the smell to die down - why don't you open the door and sit at the pool for a while' She was nearly getting drowned in the pool. Ann leant us some orange smelly stuff to put all over the room and that helped Big Bong the mushroom theorist

.

The three of us decided to take a walk around town and we checked some of the other hostels to see if we could move there the next night - every one of them were shit holes -better the devil you know. We also found out that Byron Bay is part of a National Park and we couldn't just fish anywhere. We went out later that night and decided to numb our senses before heading back to the hostel - it also helped to forget about the cockroaches. It was an open mike night and we had great craic.

The next day we decided to take a bus trip to a town called Nimbin (about 1 hour from Byron). This place is a hippy commune and the people there are constantly stoned. It is hilarious. We went to the museum which had the history of the town and what the people stood for - it's about as crazy a place as you're ever likely to see. After that we headed to the HEMP Bar (Help End Marajuana Prohibition) for coffee and cookies;) (adults - you should check out their web cam to have a look at some of the characters in the bar - a href http://nimbinhempbar.420-web-hosting.com/mardigrass2005 /a href

They hold a Mardi grass every year and we have been invited back in May 06!! Jackarandas

! Yeah right!

We got talking to the owner who was called Big Bong. He explained to us that humans were closer, evolutionarily speaking, to mushrooms than fish. He went on to explain that if you put 4 smaller mushrooms on the stem of one big mushroom it could look like a miniature person - sort of. He was deadly serious!!!!! Help. It was soooooo funny - trying not to laugh and look serious agreeing with him.

The same guy also has a car called the Big Bong Mobile which he built himself - you can just imagine. The car comes complete with floral decoration - you have to have a look at the web site - www.bigbongmobile.com - be sure to check out the whole site - it's dead funny.

After leaving the twilight zone we went for a swim in a local watering hole and then on to have a bar-b-q at a local park (we think). Later back at Byron we fancied a mellow evening so we had a few beers and watched a few movies (hilarious).

Groovy man!
