After leaving Lake Argyle we decided to free camp at East Baines river south of Katherine. We love camping out in the bush, usually a fair way off the highway so it is nice and quiet. There were 6 other campers pulled up so we felt quite safe.  Around 11pm all hell broke loose, 3 car loads of abos arrived and I thought this was the end as a car load can consist of at least 10. We had no phone cover, so I assumed nobody else would either and even then we were about 50kms from the nearest town. The women screech like the cockatoos.  God knows what they were on about. I was up looking through the window, fearing for our lives while Ray was having a lovely sleep.  After 45 minutes or so car doors started banging and off they all went.  So much for the free camping and the quiet surrounds! The next morning the only reminder of the ordeal was an empty beer box and empty cans.
Next stop was Katherine. We booked into a lovely caravan park set among palm trees for the next 3 days. We spent some time at Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) Culture centre where we learned about the Jawoyn tribe, the traditional owners, through dreamtime stories.  The 3 gorge trip up the Katherine River was beautiful and again the scenery was magnificent with sandstone walls towering 60 metres high. Saw a couple of crocs along the way too.
We went to the hot springs at Katherine and had a swim, it was fantastic, the water was 32 degrees, the complete extreme to Lake Argyle.
Tomorrow we  head to  Kakadu National Park.
