Cont'd Day 17, Wednesday 15 January

The lady at the Guatemalan border seemed to like Facebook more than checking our passports so after a 'little' wait it was Bienvenidos de Guatemala ! Country number 3 of CA.
We continued on our way towards Flores and after a pitstop at the ATM for some Quetzals we arrived on the pretty little island of Flores. It has lovely cobbled streets and small quaint shops. First impressions of Guatemala were very positive.

We were dropped off the bus and we set off in search of accommodation. We had been recommended Los Amigos but when we found it the only room available was a tree house with 2 walls. Given that we usually prefer 4 walls....we went in search of more options! We found a nice place not far away, Mirador Del Lago.

It was a pretty long day on the road so all we managed that night was dinner and a couple of drinks. We had also booked a tour of Tikal for the following day and were being collected at 4am!!

We did however manage to fit in a local pilgrimage walk. We have no idea what Catholic festival it was for but it involved about 16 men carrying a great big box with lights attached! The crowd was following the procession and at the very back was a mobile generator to power the whole thing...quite the spectacle!!

Day 18, Thursday 16 January

Tikal is a world famous Mayan historical site. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centres of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BC.

Despite being up at the ungodly hour of 3.30am the tour was really good, the guide talked about a mix of the history of the site and also pointed out loads of wildlife, tarantulas included!

After some free time strolling around Tikal we decided that we were pretty much 'templed-out' and headed back to the cafe. Another tight squeeze onto the bus and we headed back into Flores. After a much needed rest we strolled around the town that afternoon and then headed for an emotional last supper with Michelle (aka Canada) before she headed on the night bus to Antigua.
