After traveling throughout the Middle East on business trips over the past few years, I highly recommend Jordan for first-timers.  It's certainly different than the Western World, but the people and culture are very Western friendly...therefore making it an easy location for those who haven't traveled throughout Muslim countries before.  Despite it's neighboring countries, you can peacefully float in the Dead Sea without a care in the world...you would never know there was unrest only a few hundred miles away.   I would not hesitate to return and it's a "high recommend" in my book.
