Wow....
Entry 9 of 11 | show all | print this entry |
hello again! It's wonderful that I am able to get to a computer again!
I would like to comment on all the wonderful messages regarding my spelling and typing issue! It seems that many people are interested in my conventional errors :)
Although, I do not think I need to justify any of my actions, here I go. I have limited time and access to the net, therefore, I try to get out as much as possible. The connection is often very slow, so I am unable to use the spell check at the end of my message AND many times, I am asked to end my net session immediately, leaving me NO time to edit! But, I thank you all for being so concerned with my errors that you need to tell me so when I am exactly half way around the world! As for the fake post referencing Joe. Well, all i have to say is it's amazing how little people care about their own lives that they need to focus on mine. I feel very honored. Please continue reading my blog, but you are not welcomed to post. My students read this and I find it extremely unprofessional. thanks.
Well now back to the most important part!
I am back in Salem, having a wonderful time. We arrived from Bangalore, which was fansatic. We went on a Sarfari! It was COOL. Lions, Tigers, and Bears....plus many other animals. I have lots of pictures, that I will be posting on the web later, ( I forgot my USB cord...I am at another host house using his net right now ;) We also went to 2 great resturants for dinner while we were there which was awesome. Hypno's was a greek place and get this TGI Fridays for STEAK....yes people in India eat steak! It was soooooo good! We then left back for Salem to celebrate the Pongal festival and present at a joint Rotary meeting, about 300 people were there! It was very nice and well organized. Again, we were presented with many gifts, including a beautiful hand painted painting of Ginesha. very nice. Last night we dined with District Gov. Ravi and his wife Geetha. That was a ton of FUN!!!!! I have many stories about that dinner, but only time for 2. One, Ryan and I taught everyone the Hokie Pokie! (A hoot) and 2. Geetha is so very sweet. She is an amazing woman who gave me a wonderful complement, that brought me to tears. She said, You are so sweet, Maggie, I will never forget you, not even when I am taking my last breath. I was moved by such a nice thing. We had a fastastic time last night! Ryan has everyone doing a special handshake too. He taugh Ravi, and I taught Geetha. Not to mention all the wonderful gifts they presented us! Tonight, I have been informed will be just a fun, dinner with Vasant.
Today was great. Mike and I went to a possible matching grant spot, we went to an Orphanage and School. There were about 700 kids there. They need desks and chairs, becasue there school does not have any. The orphanage was very sad. The infant unit, made me cry. There were babies laying on mats in the halls, and in the cribs inside was the cutest little boy, who's mother was going to kill him because she didn't want him due to having 3 other kids and the father had died of AIDS. But the neighbors intervend and brought him there. He is 18 days old. Oh my, so precious. Again, tears. We walked over to the school after that, and visited with the children. It pretty amazing how little these kids have, but how thankful they are. IT's quite a honor to be in their presence and a great lesson to bring back. Americans tend to take many things for granted. these students study on floors and have no parents, yet are so happy to be learning and living.
After this visit, we rushed to the police commissioner's office to meet up with Ryan and his host Dr. Suresh. It was quite an honot to mee the commiss, apparently these types of meeting don't happen all that often. Ryan is going to be riding and given a tour for the rest of teh day, while I and the Dr. are going for a Tamil movie. I won't understand a word, but am told it is a great cultural experience. So we will see :) I will let you know.
We are leaving Salem tomorrow morning, and heading for a place I can't spell or pronounce, but I will you know later. In 3 days, we get to ride Elephants! Yes, real elephants, and I get my own!!! I am very excited. It will be a great experience. I spoke with the Assistant gov. on the phone last night, Shankar's good friend, who will be setting it all up. I must mention the 4 Rotarians who have been taking great care of us, Palam, Shankar, "The Godfather" & the mimic. They have been with us so much, looking out, always watching over us, and really taking care of e verytihng. They refuse to let us pay for anything, and are super FUN!!!!! I have lots of pictures :)
WEll, I must sign off. Thanks for the shout outs and will be blogging again soon :)
love you all and miss you much! mags

Having lived overseas and experienced some of the hit-and-miss internet capabilities, you are doing a fabulous job of getting the accounts of your adventures sent out! Keep up the terrific writing!
BTW, I think you and Ryan should teach'em the Chicken Dance, too! Enjoy!

Hi Maggie,
So great to see another blog from you. There was a breakdown from the website, apparently, and I didn't receive an e-mail saying there was a new posting. Time is so funny. Don't know whether you've done it or not, but hope the elephants were a real hoot. I am so grateful Mike is surrounded by a team that is so cooperative and upbeat. You are all very special people. Of course, ... show all

Hi there. It sounds like you are having a wonderful time. What an awesome experience you are having. The girls keep asking if you are going to be back in time for the tournament. The 8th graders have lost 2 games now, but so far, they are still in the running at 2nd place. They are discouraged, but are determined to come back. I hope you are doing well. Have fun. I can't wait to see all your pictu... show all
