Yesterday Billy who is 10 had a spelling bee that Bill and I attended.  The teacher had given the kids some words to practice and on the way to school in the car we had some fun practicing them.  Billy told us later that before the spelling be he told his friend that his dad and his dad's friend from New York were going to be there.  Billy's friend told him "Your dad's friend from New York? ... You better win!"
They started with about 50 kids and Billy got through about 10 rounds in good shape.  They narrowed it down to about 5 kids (picture attached).  And then down to the final two for the championship round - Billy, still knocking it out of the park, and Alyssa. They went back and forth for five rounds in the championship round with each getting some right and some wrong. The winner had to get two in a row right to win the championship.  I have video of the championship round which I am trying to post, but it is taking a long time to load since it is nine minutes long. It was very dramatic.  A lot of kids cried when the got eliminated, but their classmates were very good about consoling them. Finally, Billy faltered on the word "turbulence" and Alyssa took the championship on the word "cosmos".  If he had gotten "cosmos" he probably would have nailed it since he has a lot of interest in reading about Greek mythology - but that's gthe luck of tyhe draw.  As the words got more difficult, the kids were generally not familiar with the words but were giving it their best educated guess on the spelling. Billy was very happy with his second place finish and trophy. It was a lot of pressure and some kids froze or went blank on words that they probably could easily have spelled.  All in all, I guess it is probably a fairly benign way to learn to deal a little with success and failure in a supportive environment. We were very proud of Billy and happy for him.
Today he has a basketball game - a different type of challenge.  He says he is hoping that Mr. Callahan will be his good luck charm again!
