Got into New Orleans late last night. These trains tend to be late. Priority is given to freight trains that often use the same tracks, so it is not unusual to have to pull over for 45 minutes to let a freight train pass. I stayed in the French Quarter which is very close to the Amtrak station and had some good creole food last night. Also had a a bed and a hot shower which will be in short supply on this trip. New Orleans, of course, is a cool place - lots of good music everywhere. Heading out now for Houston. This will be one of the shorter legs of the journey - just a quick nine hour shot on the train today. Will be spending three days in Houston with Bill Schmidt and his family. This line is called the Sunset Limited. It goes from New Orleans to Los Angeles. I will get back on the Sunset Limited on Saturday and continue from Houston to LA.
