After an exhausting first month in Guangzhou, we needed to escape. The Yangshuo Village Retreat was the place to go. It cost more than our normal youth hostel, but set outside of Yangshuo, in the village of Shi Ban Qiao, the peace and quiet and beauty were worth it. A 5 minute walk to the East and we were at the Li River.Another 5 minutes and we were in the beautifully covered, riverside market that gauntlets all the visitors arriving by boat from Guilin. A 5-10 minute walk further and we were near the heart of Yangshuo. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so I'll not even try to describe more of the geography apart from photos. I will however say more about our stay. We've wanted to visit Yangshuo  for months and to that end I Googled Yangshuo Hostels weeks ago. Tripper's Carpe Diem popped up and intrigued me because of the "Belgian & Chinese" hosts and all that was offered. I exchanged numerous e-mails with Gerd, aka Tripper and knew I had to check the place out. As I said, it was spendy, as they sent their car to meet us at the Guilin airport. I much prefer the scenery from the front seat of a car then from the back seat of a bus. It was a great drive and Tripper and his wonderful wife Jenny, mother of two, greeted us, as they appeared to greet most of their guests. They and their staff were constantly available for chats and they've put together quite a notebook of things to do in the area. They can get discount tickets on most things, and we allowed them to do so frequently. For 20 RMB, a bike rental and ride through the countryside was exquisite, unlike the mud baths Ruth and Jennifer took in the Moon Water Cave (Ruth forbids any photos). Last night, after the incredible front row performance by Clint and friend of  "Erhu (2 string instrument) and Flute," and before taking our leave to catch the sleeper bus back to Guangzhou, (which they arranged for us), I told Tripper that we plan on returning this summer, for at least three reasons: a) location, location, location; b) their wonderful hospitality and c) the cuisine. It had been a long time since I had a decent Chicken Cordon Bleu or schnitzel and the selection of local and Belgium beers.Wow!
