Going to the grocery store on trips is one of my favourite pasttimes. Besides the constant price comparisons (why is Bombay Saphire Gin more expensive in $US here than the $CDN price in the minute town of Bowser, BC?), there's also the whole look and regional brand deviations. Stoned Wheat Thins (despite ultimately being owned by Kraft) appear to be a banned item in the US. And where the hell are Fudgicles and Creamsicles?
The snack and cereal aisles are a bounty of new curiosities. I succumb to the bizarre promise of Peanut Butter Bumpers, a kids' cereal with absolutely no sugar and a fairly impressive nutritional rating. Alas, they taste healthy as well. Most fruit and vegetables in Hawaii are pricey, even the stuff grown here. Butter from Seattle costs half the locally produced stuff (in nicer packaging, might I add). Julie gets excited because it actually comes in sticks.
The tins and labels are frequently wonderful. This is ironic, as Hawaii has almost zero recycling. All those fancy bottles and cans go straight into some landfull on this island paradise. I spend the week keeping an eye cocked for the Honolulu dump, but it fails to appear on tourist maps or signposts.
