The day started off well with poptarts and coffee. We started hiking early so that we could beat the heat. That plan didn't work because it was already really hot. We took the Notch trail which was kind of crowded then we hiked the Window trail next, which was my favorite. What was cool about the hikes was that you could get up close to the rock formations and see how crumbly they were. I climbed a few of the rocks and found a seat there. Before lunch we drove to Interior SD, which was pretty dumpy and boring. The one store had a few things we needed like beef jerky. Back to Cedar Lodge for lunch and then out on the trails again. This time, Dad and I left Mom behind and climbed on top of the rocks which was really cool. After hiking we drove a different way out and saw where the prairie dogs lived. There was also one bison, which we could see in the distance. The whole time we saw four bison, which was a little odd becuz the books talk about a herd of 800.

On to the Custer State Park and our campsiteo at the Blue Bell campsite. We're in the Black hills now and our campsite is about 4800 feet up. It takes time to set up the tent, so while Dad did that, Mom and I explored and bought essentials like ice, hot dogs, s'mores fixins and more jerky at the camp grocery. Because of the forest fires threat, we couldn't have a campfire but luckily we brought a camp stove. Our first meal at camp was great-roasted hotdogs and popcorn popped on the stove, then s'mores. By the time we finished eating it was close to 9pm and getting dark. Mom and I planned on watching a movie in the tent but the dvd player ran out of power. We didn't have much else to do so we went to bed.

Hahahahaha - I don't think I have ever said need and beef jerkey in the same sentence. You guys really set a great bbq table. Looks like a full day.

Was it hotter than Florida? We are very proud of you hiking in the heat. The hills are beautiful! Did you come across any Ghost Towns from the gold rush?
