I was a bit skeptical about spending two more months on my own, especially without a meal plan and with a roommate (I got spoiled by having my extra large double to myself spring semester). It was my 1st paying job as well, and the experience was overwhelming. However, I grew to love it, and I didn't want the summer to end or to go home. Here are some highlights from my summer at Rice:
- working in Dr. Beckingham's fly lab and learning how to cross fruit flies to get weird mutations and handle their DNA
- discovering that I do want to go to grad school and do research in the Bioc department
- helping Becky cook food (hooray for not starving!)
- going out for some authentic Chinese food (Hunan Plus is NOT authentic!)
- going to Miyako's with Becky so many times that they probably recognize us
- getting hooked on Taiwanese dramas and romance novels
- inheriting the anime club presidency and the karaoke-DDR club equipment
- Miyazaki and girly movie nights, tennis practice, and shopping with Amanda and Becky
- Soccer Saturdays/Sundays
There's still a lot I want to do while I'm here, but unfortunately I won't get the chance. It's okay though because I'm feeling the urge to go home. I was just there for the July 4th weekend, but I've got a bad case of eczema and hives and an infected finger on top of that. Too bad things had to end so poorly, but that's life. It's been a good experience.
