a visit to Taiwan
Entry 2 of 8 | show all | print this entry |
After spending a day or two in Canada, we went to Taiwan. At that time, I hadn't seen my relatives in 5 1/2 years. We usually try to visit every 2-5 years, but I don't remember visiting before going to my aunt's wedding in 3rd grade (1993). That's of course not counting the year I spent living with my grandparents as a baby. The visits are always divided in halves: Taipei/Tucheng and Tainan (where my paternal grandparents lived before moving to Dan Shui). We'd also stop by Shintzu on the train ride to Tainan to visit my aunt and uncle, but I don't think we did that in 1999.
In any case, I would wind up getting bored after being in Taiwan for a couple of weeks. I was too young to enjoy shopping, and it would rain most of the afternoon. If it didn't, it was still too humid for anybody to really want to go outside. I recall watching a lot of music videos and anime on TV (something I still do ^^). For this trip, my grandmother decided to gather all of her children's families for a Wang family portrait. My parents assumed it was a casual event so we didn't back any formal clothes. Back then, you had to fight to get me into a dress, but eventually they did force me to borrow one of my aunt's dresses and another aunt's shoes (because I only wore Vans). Looking back at the photos, which are in various places throughout the house, it's interesting to see who has changed between 1999 and 2007. I haven't too much, surprisingly.
The date I have here is semi-arbitrary. It's a few days before we went to the Philippines. Our family friends, the Hongs, invited us to meet them in Kaoshiung and go to the Philippines with them.
