On Monday, the students came back to school to bid the departing teachers farewell. So more speeches and tears. The kids gave their favorite teachers presents, and I gave them photos I had collected. Everyone liked the silly ones from last Friday's nijikai.
The teachers officially departed the next day at various times. Whenever one would leave, everybody would go out to see them off. This was more of a happy, optimistic send-off. In the morning, we cleaned the entire staff room. I was the only one who was not used to doing this since we don't have souji in America (though we should) so I don't know how useful I was. The majority of us had to move desks. Now, I'm on the other end of the desk island, and I have ambivalent feelings about it. While I like not having to freeze my butt off when somebody accidentally leaves the staff room door open, I can't slip in and out as easily. I have nothing against my new desk neighbors, but I really liked my old ones. Oh well, change was inevitable.
Today, the new teachers came and introduced themselves. I must admit that I'm a little jealous of the welcome they got. All the students on campus for club activities came out to applaud them, and the brass band played. I wish I had that, but I'm just an ALT (and I had my own ceremony). I found out that I can't go to their welcome party because it's this Friday. That's when Julia and I are seeing Duel Jewel; I can't wait!
It just occurred to me that it's April Fool's. I should've worn my new pink wig today, instead of this upcoming Friday. However, I don't think weirding out the new teachers is a good idea, and Friday is going to be relaxed (because of the enkai).
Quote of the Day
nijikai - 2nd party
enkai - teacher's party (this is not a direct translation, but that's what I'm referring to)
