Brussels turned on a dark cold morning which turned into a light snow ..probably sleet we traversed back to the station..Cologne bound... a journey of 220  kms in 1:47 mins.. the further into Germany we travelled , the heavier the snow.. viewed through the window it was magical..all the stuff movies, dreams and white Christmas' are made of... By the time Cologne appeared the weather had again changed.. cold but no snow.. no rain either ..,. a good omen for a traveller. Off the train, out into the street and following Mr Google maps again found us at Hotel Madison, close to the station..certainly is .. think the shunting yards are out he back.. between that and the chimes of Cologne's main cathedral we will be entertained.
Cologne Cathedral dominates the inner city area.Built from 1248 to 1880 It is a renowned monument of German Catholicism and Gothic architecture and is a World Heritage Site It is Germany's most visited landmark attracting an average of 20,000 people a day.  It is 144.5 metres (474 ft) long, 86.5 m (284 ft) wide and its towers are approximately 157 m (515 ft) tall. The cathedral is the largest Gothic church in Northern Europe.
With the Xmas Markets also in the surrounding square,I think 30,000 people were there today. What a Xmas market! Over 160 specially designed & decorated "cabins"  featuring  Christmas music, arts and crafts, toys, Christmas decorations and the scent of the Christmas bakeries creating  a wonderful atmosphere. The aroma of mulled wine, hot chestnuts  gingerbread and many tempting national dishes fills the air.
Inner Cologne not only has this Xmas market but another five .. all within walking distance of up to 30 minutes...that we are aware of.. special tourism maps  and mini trains to make sure nothing is missed.
The sights are nothing short of spectacular.. night fall increases the magic of it all

With satisfied tummies after all the tastings offered.. enough oohs and ah's for the day...and a mulled wine with souvenir mug  to keep. it is time to re- charge for the next day of Cologne's Christmas Cheer...
