Thank heavens for electricity and heaters in our modern world...
Woke to 3 degrees and a top temp of 7 degrees today.. a last stroll around Brugge.. breakky in a delightful local cafe, last few Xmas shops, and the  last lot of photos before heading off to Brussels...or so we thought. At Brugge station was wonderful exhibit of Ice Sculptures.. in minus 6 degrees, mind you.. wasn't going to miss this winter treat.. and a treat it was.. life size ice sculptures crafted by workers in "huge" winter coats, chainsaws and a lot of vodka I'm thinking..The sculptures bring a magical world of snow, ice and light  Over 300 tonnes of ice and 400 tonnes of snow are cut, shaped, carved and polished into amazingly detailed figures inspired by Harry Potter. The sheer size of them is amazing, the details and imagination amazing.. for the kid in us could sit at the "ice table" lay on the "pelt covered" bed or slide down the "castle "wall..which was done by yours truly.. can imagine the sheer speed/terror of the luge now.. but what fun!!
The train back to Brussels soon has us warmed up and thawed out , watching the farms & villages go by until it seems like rain ahead but no.. it is the winter chill / fog.. visibility quickly reduced!!  Brussels station wasn't much warmer than the 6 degrees outside, thankfully our accommodation was a short 5 minute walk across the traffic. Thanks Ibis for a large spacious warm room ...
The thought of Xmas entices us out ..rugged up well Brussels Christmas market .. it stretches for 2 km with a series of shops, chalets, attractions,  fun activities .. such as ice skating, merry go rounds and an enormous Ferris wheel ..just the  place to taste local delicacies, buy a souvenir and be amazed once more .. A glass of the white mulled wine here, a shot of speculoos liqueur there and some of the traditional  "Tartiflette savoyarde"( type of potato bake with their special touch) soon has one feeling right at home..with the hundreds of others/ locals.
From the Grand Place , with it's Illumination spectaculars over the facades of the Town Hall and the King’s House right up to Place St Catherine with it's fantasy  baroque character merry go rounds, and the  60 metre ice rink , it is a sight to behold. Sleep comes easily once more with thoughts of lights, sights and the magic of Xmas continuing
