On the 31st of Aug, Malaysia was celebrating it's 50 years of independance and therefore it was public holidays. What else to do on such occasion than party?
I went out for dinner in ChinaTown with friends first and then we went to Dataran Merdeka (the Independance square) to watch the fireworks. We had to wait for too long for my liking but hey! At least it was not raining!!!!

I also had the honor to be invited to a Malay wedding... full package, lah: the small party with prayer from the bride side, the big reception from the bride side, the small party with prayer from the groom side, the big reception from the groom side!!!!

Man i have never changed so many times!!! but then the bride and groom were changing too so I have no excuses I guess!!!

At the wedding itself, there is not that much happening... You dress up, you arrive, say hello to everyone, a bit of a prayer or some dances and then makan (eat). You take a few pictures, say hello to a few people and then once that's done you are free to leave! It's only a matter of a few hours each time but everything looks grand!

- The first ceremony was the religious wedding at the mosque, where the couple gets officially married and thet exchange the rings along with presents.

- The second ceremony is the bride's reception with more guests with a more prayer and a buffet lunch. A present is giving to all the guests... little little not too big! There was around 150 people here.

- The third ceremony is at the groom's house and there are not too many people. The couple was on a stage while everyone was giving them their blessing as well as a prayer time.

- The fourth ceremony is once again a reception, this time at the groom side with many many guests. They were apparently expecting 2000 people in total although they dont normally all come at the same time. A gift was giving to all of the guests once again but there was also a band playing and some traditional dances under a marquis.

I found a few potential future husbands there: the friends of my friend. It's true that by being the only white person there you attract a bit more attention but they really appreciate when you are wearing the traditional clothes. Also, if there is another white person there, they will automatically associate you with them....
