Having said that spending 3 months in Malaysia is not that usual for me, spending Christmas in the sun in Senegal is even more unusual ! I think that this year is one of the years in my life when I have seen sun the most!! I love it!!!
Even Toulouse is sunning in comparison to Bristol but spending the winter holidays on the beach cannot be compared to anything!!!especially when you are with your family!
As you might guess from the above I have loved my holidays with my family in Dakar!
We took the car everyday and ventured in the street of Dakar; first into the known market of Sandanga, then into the chaotic area of Medina and eventually right outside our neighbourhood into Ouakam. Street life in all of these area plays its role in different ways but they are all crazy and great! We needed all sort of stuff for the house which enabled us to bargain down to the real price of things and sometimes it is not easy! We started by paying 3 times the price of bottled water! At the beginning you thing it's impossible/ unbelievable but then it quickly becomes routine.
The people are very nice and caring if you get on their good side otherwise they might be ruthless because they realise they are not going to do business with you but hey, it's a bit like this everywhere!!! Life is hard especially in a tourism driven country...
Otherwise, with m parents we enjoyed the sun by going to the beach and into the swimming pool but the water was actually not that hot, definitely not as hot as in Bali and Malaysia!! They are good surfing spots
We went on a safari and saw lots and lots of animals especially giraffes and a rino!!! We even went to touch it! Well I only touched for a few seconds until it moved and I got scared to get hit!!
Our special Christmas present was also a special entry on my wish list: since I am working in Toulouse in flight test, I really wanted to fly and that's what my dad organised for us!! We went flying in a Piper with 4 seats over the peninsular of Dakar, over the islands near by, over the Pink lake (where the Paris Dakar used to finish) and then over the port and the main part of the town. We went before the sun went down so the light was beautiful and it's a really good memory. For the record, I flew the plane for a little while but only when we where going in straight lines!!!
The rest of the holidays went pretty quickly. We went to the Pink Lake and were the only tourists around. It was great. We went swimming into the ocean and then into the lake. It is a special lake because of its colour due to some algae and also due to the amount of salt it has. We were floating!!! It's strange feeling but you don't realise immediately and then when you get out you realise you are covered in it... Mmmm... interesting!!!
