Flag of Belgium  , Antwerpen,
Friday, December 24, 2010

Rolling into Belgium, if it weren`t for some flags posted, I would not have known where Holland ends and Belgium begins.  It is a flat and somewhat plain landscape covered with plenty of small farms and villages here and there.  Off to he side of the autobahn, you could see one of the highspeed trains flying down the track at 230+ km per hour, creating a monsterous swirl cloud of snow behind it.  I wish I had my camera out to catch a picture of it.

As we approached Antwerp, I must admit that I knew really nothing about Belgium.  I had no idea what to expect.  I had always heard about it in movies and sometimes on the news.  I quickly found out that it is the capital for the EU, and that it was a pretty expensive country.  No one seemed to be hurting for money too much here.  It is also the 2nd biggest shipyard in all of Europe.  Random information for the day.  All of the buildings were convered in amazing detail.  The main square is where we spent the majority of our 2 hours in town.  With a warm cup of Gluhwein, the four of us, Ceyda, her sister Melda, husband Ziya and myself walked up and down some small streets taking pictures.    Being in the north of Belgium, they spoke dutch still, which was surprising because I was hoping to put my french skills to use.  I guess that would have to wait though.  When it got to the point that we couldn`t feel our fingers and toes again, the four of us piled back in the car and decided to head to our final destination of the day, and where Melda and Ziya would be dropping us to head back to Amsterdam.  Short but sweet.....I have a feeling I will be back to do this city more justice in the spring.
