So, as some of you have heard from me already, really enjoying Singapore, esp after stepping out of India. In many ways, its like going to a different planet. The clean streets, new malls, and ambient air are a refreshing spectacle. People have always talked about how clean this city is, and I don't think you get the picture until you are here. Its the kind of place you could eat off the public transit marble floor, its that clean, no kidding. Even the street puddles look like pools of fresh water. While all of this comfort is great, it comes with a price, namely Singapore dollars. Last night a few of us (Im staying in a dorm, which is the same cost as my hotel in Kolkata but a good way to meet folks) went to a section called Clarke Quay, and beers in this riverside area started at $14 Singapore. Outrageous! Thankfully, I chose to stay in Chinatown, where prices are more in line. Alas, though, I will depart tomorrow and head for Indonesia, where my dollar still rules a bit. The plan, now, as I have been redirected thanks to events in Bangkok, is to cross overland to Australia, then meet the bear in early Feb. Its a bit of a less traveled road, esp in the extremities of Indo, so Im excited to blaze a bit.

Im adding pics from India up to Singapore in Picasa. Enjoy!

Going to Indonesia
Hello Matt,
It's been so nice to hear from you and follow your adventures in Asia. Adam and I talk so much about how much fun you must be having and all the things you are learning. You are right about Singapore, it is so clean but so expensive. We thought kind of boring if you will. Anyway, keep having fun. We were only in Bali where it is a beautiful island and people are very friendly. It is very touristy though, but because of that people are very open about tourists. We heard Jakarta is very estrict in terms of muslims traditions. Anyway keep us posted and keep having fun.
Isabel.
