Wow this country goes craazy for Halloween. I had such a great time I really wish we did it on the same scale in the UK. Perhaps it wouldn't work, we're not great at the whole making an idiot of ourselves in public thing (unless we're drunk of course, or coming out of a football match, or usually both).

The funny thing is now because of safety concerns the kids go round all the high street stores (with buckets) collecting sweets, instead of door to door. The amount of effort and money that must have gone into some of these costumes was incredible. Full astronaut body suits, tv and film characters, and this was just the kids. The adults went even further, but they decided not to put on their costumes until it got dark.

At around 6pm I got my place at the front of the barrier (and only just in time, New Yorkers turn up early) to watch the Halloween Parade through Greenwich Village. Anyone in a costume can join it. I considered taking part but since I had only gone with a modest blonde wig and sunglasses bought at the last minute (rock star? I dunno) I decided just to watch.

I'll let the photos speak for themselves but suffice to say it was very impressive and great fun to watch. There was the inevitible political satire, some semi-subtle (e.g. a guy holding a model of the White House with snakes and rats in it), some less so (a line of people carrying the slogan 'Arrest Bush...but first arrest Cheney').

My highlight was the entire Zombie cast of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller', along with the music. Check out my video!

Also fun was the drunken mess that was the train ride home. Surrounded by fairies, pixies, zombies, and wonderwoman. Occasionally one of them retired to the train restroom to be sick. Hilarity hehe.

For more (and better) photos of the parade check out

Next stop Washington DC.
