I Like to ride my bicycle, i like to ride my bike!
Trip Start Oct 04, 2004

After spending a few days in Perth, we decided to visit Rottnest Island, located just off the coast of Fremantle, a town famous for its large seaport. We boarded the ferry for the small 20-minute trip, and were quickly stepping off onto the very windy island.
Rottnest Island bans all motorised transport apart from one bus, so we ended up at the bike hire place. For some stupid reason I suggested hiring a tandem, so in no time flat we were peddling, if not a bit unsteadily, out of the shop
I can quite honestly say that riding a tandem is absolute hell, trying to pedal in sync, and not having any control at the back was a nightmare. Without a doubt, hiring these contraptions is not recommended!
We did eventually get used to it though, so made our way around the island, stopping at many beautiful beaches. You can see from the photo's why Rottnest' beaches are voted the best in the country year in, year out.
At one of the beaches, we watched 2 old boys fishing. I've never people catch so much fish in such a short amount of time. They were literally casting out, reeling back in straight away, un-hooking the fish and casting out again. I'm not a fisherman, but surely this would get boring?
Feeling knackered, hot and very sore, we gave the bike back, vowing never to hire a tandem again. Back on the ferry, we managed to persuade the very good looking ticket girl to let us stay on all the way back to Perth (rather than getting off at Fremantle and catching the train back).
Although this added an extra hour to the journey, it did give us a chance to check out all the very nice, multi-million dollar mansions, built next to the river. One day..!
Other things that happened in Perth whilst we stayed their
Walked into a friend from home, Louie from Churchill's bar, on Perth's high street. I knew he was travelling in oz, still very random though! Sadly he left Perth the next day, but we managed a night out on the town before he left!
Visited Perth Mint. Watched liquid gold being poured to make a gold bar; tried, difficulty, to lift a gold bar, and also found out that my weight is worth $1,471,720 (£600,000) in gold, not surprisingly more than Dan!
Visited Fremantle Prison in the evening. A Maximum-Security prison, it was weird to see how basic the conditions were for the prisoners, especially as it only closed 10 years earlier! We were shown around the whole prison, including where they used to do the hanging!
