Alcohol Poisoning in Mahunapua

For a change we had a reasonable small journey today, a mere 153kms, travelling along the spectacular West Coast Road, that stretches 435 kms along the rugged Tasman coastline.
Our first stop was for a walk along some very windy cliffs to the ironically named Cape Fowlwind. Ironically named as the Cape is home to New Zealand's biggest colony of seals, which STINK! It was here we discovered we were standing at the closest point to Australia. Although I use the word 'closely' loosely, at it would still take you a good 2 weeks to swim. Give me the English Channel any day! Further down the road we stopped at a Punakiki to view the Punakiki Pancake rocks. These are a series of stratified limestone stacks, which, over many thousands of years, have eroded to give the effect of giant, neatly stacked pancakes. Another prominent feature are the blowholes, which, at high tide, throw up columns of dazzling spray. (yes i copied that out of the guidebook and no I don't know what stratified means!) Sods law we were there at low tide so no blowholes for us!
As we boarded the bus we were told by Monique that tonight was the night we take part in the famous fancy dress party. Most people, including me, groaned, but quickly brightened up when we were told that the 1st prize was a go on a canyon swing in the town of Queenstown. Only one condition, you could only spend $10, about 4 quid. Luckily for us there was a Wilkinson-style superstore in the next town. After much aisle walking and umming and erring I came up with the great idea of being Cupid for the night. Well I was an attached man with Katie, so I thought I'd spread the love! I managed to find a cheap bow and arrow, a facemask, and to top it off, a furry red heart cushion, just big enough for me to squeeze into!
With all our kit bought we drove the rest of the way to the ghost town of Mahinapua, home to the strangely named Poo Pub, our accommodation for the night, and not much more. I think the reason why we stay here is because it's in the middle of nowhere, so we can't disrupt anyone with the noise we make! Keeping a long story short, 2 Welsh girls won first prize, dressing up as a kind of Indian boat thing?! Personally I felt robbed and I think there might have been a bit of vote rigging in the judges, I had to settle for 4th place and a t-shirt! What was to follow was a night of alcoholic debauchery, with drinking games played until the wee small hours. The problem with that though was I seemed to lose every game. Because of this, apparently I had to be carried to bed. I say apparently as I have absolutely no memory after losing the 3rd game! [I was told the next day that i had actaully managed to drop one of the welsh girls camera into a pint of beer?!]
For the first time since I was 16, getting drunk on Malibu and cokes at Zero nightclub, I threw up all that I had consumed that night... a few times! Not the best introduction to my new fellow travellers! More thumbnails ...
