We arrived in Nelson the previous night to another brand new hostel. We were starting to get used to all the home comforts these hostels provided. Real beds, duvets and clean showers for a change!
Partly because it had a brand-new kitchen, and also the fact I was spending a kings ransom each night on take out, I decided to cook for myself. Now I'm no Jamie Oliver, but I was still quite proud of my dish!
3 Sausages
Butter
Asparagus
Lemon juice
Sun dried tomato
½ Pint of local beer
All thrown into the frying pan together and served straight up
Now granted, I probably wouldn't have won Masterchef, or a Michelin star, but I thought it tasted bloody nice. Katie on the other hand thought it was the most disgusting meal she had ever tasted. Different tastes I suppose!
The following morning we all headed up to the local flea market to finish up buying the last of the Christmas presents. Nelson has developed into one of the South islands most diverse agricultural centres, the main products being fruit, hops and wood products, although Dan seemed to get accosted by an eager knife seller, desperate for him to buy one for his dad. I don't think customs would have been very happy with Dan sending an 18inch knife through the post!
So, the guidebook says nelson is the sunniest place in New Zealand? Looking up at the skies, I was a bit sceptical, but then again, we hadn't really been that lucky with the weather so far! With this in our mind we thought we would head to the beach to see if it would get sunnier for us. And what a beach it was! As long as the eye could see, with a backdrop of snow capped mountains. It gave Southend a run for its money!
What made all the blokes decide to run into the sea I don't know, maybe to save face in front of the ladies, who knows! Either way, we were surprised that the water was actually warm, not what you expect with mountains in the background! It was actually warmer in the water than out in the now very gusty wind!
Because of the wind, it made it quite hard to sunbathe, but was ideal for the many Kite surfers doing their stuff further down the beach. A few of us walked down to watch and were quite amazed at what they could do. Although obviously showing off to some watching girls, we were secretly impressed! I might have to learn this sport!
It did eventually get warmer, so as all proper British do, we stripped off to try and tan our pasty white bodies. Muggins here fell asleep though, not the best thing to do when there isn't an ozone layer above you - see photo above. Pass the after-sun won't you, its going to hurt in the morning!
