We spent the previous night getting aqainted with 3 girls that arrived on the island that day so unsurpringly I slept through my alarm and missed my last dive - the deep dive. Not a big problem as I could go another day, but a bit annoying when I found out they saw tuna and sharks whilst down there!
The 3 girls were all from England, there was the lovely Alex and Hannah from London who were just the funniest girls we had met so far, mainly because they had the dirtiest mouths we had ever heard, and then there was quiet katie, who we later found out was a Marine Biologist who lives in Brisbane, Australia.
Because I had a day off from the diving, (deciding to wait for Dan to catch up with his dives so we could do the deep dive together), I had a spare day
We had come prepared and brought snorkeling gear so spent the next hour out in the sea. Kate the Marine Biologist nearly had a fit when she saw us walking out of the sea with a star fish though! So we returned them straight away before she jumped on us - not before we got a picture though!
The sun comes down surprisngly early so we made our way back up the hill and then down to the resort before we got stranded. As I said before there isn't much to do on the island at a night time so tonight I came up with the idea of making a fire by the beach, because you know there's nothing more entertaining than a good sing song by the fire at a nightime! The island had a plentiful supply of spare wood and after a scout around for fallen palm tree leaves we had a fire that would have impressed the Pudding Lane baker! (the person who started the Fire of London for all non-historians!)
Slowly everyone paired off and dissapeared back to their huts, leaving me, Dan, Dean and Rob sitting their cursing the women of the island for having bad taste and not choosing us
Wednesday 10th November
Dan had now caught up with his dives so we both headed out on the boat for the last time to complete our deep dive. Before this we had only been allowed to dive to a depth of 18 metres, now we were to dive a bit further, a mere 30 metres! The only thing Rick warned us about was the dangers or nitrogen narcosis or Narx for short. This is a condition suffered by divers when they dive deep The condition causes loss of motor function and decision-making ability and can be more clearly defined as causing you to become "drunk". A big danger if your at deep depths. Because of this we must not go deeper than 30 metres Thinking this was just a warning and that it probably wouldn't happen, I kiitted up and got ready to fall in the water with Dan and Rick.
The thing I noticed most when decending was the loss of colour, the further you decend, the more colours start dissapearing. At 10 metres your eye cannot detect the colour red which makes any cuts on your body turn blue, a bit freaky!
In no time we were down at 30 metres swimming around looking at the different fish you only see at this depth
After chasing them for a minute I heard a tapping noise, the sound of metal against metal, it was Rick above me, frantacily trying to get my attention to come up, luckily I snapped out of it a came up to the safe depth of 30 metres. Looking at my computer, I realised that I had actually gone down to 36 metres. Not good!
But that wasn't all, whilst I was checking my computer Dan and Rick had swam off, leaving me alone. I waited there for five minutes, and just before I was going to acsend by myself, Rick came round the corner. To top it all off, Dan was dangerously low on air and we had to go back to the surface early. This dive had not gone well at all! Oh well at least one good thing came out of it, at least I now knew that I didn't panic in situations like that one, and Rick passed us anyway so we were now official advanced divers!
It was our last night on the island so we made sure we enjoyed it. More Fiji Bitter was drank than any other night, and because of this more stupid drunk activities occurred, like the game of beach Twister for example!? Don't ask?! Our boat for the main island was leaving in the morning and we had to catch it this time. Sadly our time was up on this island, but I'm sure your agree the bext island is just as nice...
Joke of the day
A diver was shipwrecked up onto a lonely and tropical shore. As he stood up he noticed his hands were purple, he looked at his feet and they were purple, worriedly he unzipped his wetsuit and his chest and stomach were purple. With his head in his hands he cried, "Oh my God!, I've been marooned!"
