Basically, I have found out, as suspected that touring is rough. The daily schedule consists of waking up in a hotel room (if your lucky) heading over to the venue in the van, loading in all the gear and merchandise. Soundchecking, setting up a merch booth, catching up on work, eating a meal, show, counting out tees and money, loading up the van in the middle of the night and on to the next place. Its a lot of gear and a lot of moving.
Now some days, we dont have hotel rooms, We sleep in the van as we travel or we pull to the side of the road at 3 am and sleep proped up in a chair in the van. You dont really sleep at all those nights, you just find youself waking up every 15 miutes trying to get comfortable and keep warm
Eating: You eat when you can and whats in front of you. The venues have provided us some decent meals and a lot of our meals actually come from gas stations on the side of the road. I have found that the gas station food is pretty decent here in Europe, you can get a pretty good sandwich as opposed to one of those horrible AMPM hot dogs.
Clothes: The clothing situation can get pretty gnarly....and I am not the kind of guy who needs his trousers pressed daily either..those who know me, are well aware that if anyone can go days in the same clothes, its me. But I had to re-structure my suitcase when we got to Basel Switzerland. It is now layed out in layers. The bottom of the suitcase is a bag of clothes that if not washed soon, should actually be burned. Above that is a layer of clothes that are dirty and unwearable again until washed. Next is the layer of clothes that is dirty but could actually be worn, they havent hit the stage that the clothes beneath them have hit. Then, a layer of non worn clothes..this is the thinnest layer in the suitcase and the top layer. It consists of the clothes that have yet to be worn and will be needed over the next few days. Re-layering my suitcase was one of the best things i did on the tour.
Days Off: Although the itinerary shows days off, there is no such thing. Any day off is used cathing up. Catching up on the following in this order. 1. Sleep 2. Emails 3. Work 4. A decent meal 5. More Sleep
That said, touring is fantastic. I find myself sometimes in awe of the places I am in and other times, I cant even tell you what city I am in.....its that confusing. I find myself dealing with new faces everyday, it can be hard to communicate in some counties but eventually the conversation seems to iron itself out. I get exhausted, cranky, and fed up..and then i see the Swiss Alps and it wipes it all away. I know that as we get closer to the end of the tour. I will eventually forced to deal with what i dread most......that bottom layer in my suitcase.
