Found a motel and went back to sleep
Today we made our way towards Las Vegas via Hoover Dam. The dam is much smaller than either of us imagined. Still an impressive and stylish piece of engineering. A new bridge was opened in 2010 that you can walk across. From here you get a good view of the dam and all the water.
Continuing our journey to Las Vegas we drove through a town call Boulder City. Since we liked the name we decided it might be a good place to stop and eat lunch... we were right! We ate a really nice lunch in a bistro in the historic district. Good healthy food. Since we were both tired, we decided to stay here for a night. In the evening we ate dinner at Big Horn Restaurant. The place was empty but the steak was excellent. Two tasty meals in one day
This is now the third night in a row where all the lights work.
We were woken up by a phone call from the front desk at 11am today. Yes, that is quite bad but we were really tired. We decided to take another day here in Boulder City. There is something very relaxing about this city. Apparently it has been voted ninth best retirement place in the USA.
The town has lots of sculptures and statues. We are staying in the historic district. The town was only built to house workers for the Hoover Dam so it really isn't very old. There are so many places called 'city' even though they only have a populations of a few hundred. Boulder city has a few thousand residents but is still tiny.
We went for a drive around the city and found some really nice views of Lake Mead. While driving around we spotted a male Greater Roadrunner. Incredibly fast bird! Wikipedia says they can reach up to 26mph making them the fastest flighted birds which run. We also saw a huge family of Gambel's Quails which also ran fast. There were two adult birds, a male and a female and about twelve chicks running across the road in front of us. Two chicks at the back couldn't make it up on to the curb from the road and had to run along the road looking for a lower bit to climb up. Unbelievably cute. The adults have top knots which look like 20s flapper girls' hats.
Very nice lunch today followed by a siesta. Tonight is laundry night.
