Flag of Belgium  , Bruxelles,
Wednesday, August 15, 2012

On Thursday I arrived in Brussels where my host Emile welcomed me in his apartment. It was a very nice place with interesting paintings and deco! I went in the evening to the tennis registration party where I saw some new and some familiar tennis faces.

My first match I again struggled with nerves and undue pressure and played possibly the worst match of the last few years. Then amazingly in the doubles I played extremely well and enjoyed the partnership with Italian Gianluca. I received good advice to read a book before a match and this relaxed me. Also, I witnessed an at first funny, but then rather ugly confrontation in another doubles match. I think this was a turning point for me to take tennis a little bit seriously but not too serious.

Saturday night was the players dinner and party whichwas fin. Then My last match I played badly again, but was ultra relaxed and calm about the whole thing. I'm now feeling very good about upcoming tournaments so hopefully my new mindset stays for good.

Monday I visited two cities, Bruges and Gent (very novel for an aussie to be in three major cities in half a day) which are 30 mins away from eachother. Bruges is beautiful but swarming with tourists, I am one of them though so I took a nice canal cruise and had Belgian hot dark chocolate.

Gent was again a beautiful city with less tourists so It was a bit more pleasant being there. The buildings are really nice as the photos show.

Yesterday I spent the day wandering around Brussels. It is a lively city, everything is in dutch and french and the food is good. I met up with Robert's friend Gabriel from Heidelberg and his friend Anthony and we sampled some beers and cheeses. I had an amazing cherry beer called Kriec which I really want to find in Australia when I get back. It was a nice evening.

This morning I had breakfast in the grand place, apparently the most beautiful in europe and yes it is beautiful. There is a flower carpet laid out on the place which you would have liked Mum. So I now am heading to Zurich, Switzerland for yet another tennis tournament.

Great that you were in this time in Brussel when the hughe flower carpet is on this central inner city place. I missed the "männekin piss" fountain on ya pics. And yes Bruge is one of my favourite towns in Europe. Good on ya Matt and fun in Zurich and London as next. Holger and Hobi
