Flag of Austria  , Vienna,
Tuesday, July 31, 2012

I arrived in Austria late saturday afternoon and after getting settled in to my apartment, I headed out for dinner. Close by is a street market called naschmarkt where there are lot of restaurants. I decided to have a wiener schnitzel, for the first time actually in Wien. Very good!

Later I went to a bar where the people were very friendly. I made friends with Josef and the barman Georg. It was the perfect bar for my liking, not so loud music, friendly people and interesting conversation.

The next day I was craving asian food after all the heavy savoury food I'd been eating. Vienna has some nice asian restaurants so I had Vietnamese which was tasty, then I walked around the beautiful museen quartier which as the photos show has interesting and beautiful old buildings. I then had a cheese platter for dinner, and watched the olympics. Later I went to Schik bar again where I had another night drinking local Stiegl and chatting very late.

Yesterday Josef kindly offered to show me a bit around Vienna so we met up and took a train to Hietzing, the Vienna zoo. I hadn't been to a zoo in a long time so it was unexpected and fun. Afterward we walked through beautiful gardens to Schonbruen and eventually Schonbruen castle which is spectacular. Vienna is also very green as you can see. Later we went to the Prater for dinner where I had a goulash which was excellent. We then both went back to Schik where I enjoyed one last night in Vienna, watching the sometimes crazy locals come and go from the bar and enjoying the insights of Georg.

Today I slept in, had Thai for lunch and now I am waiting to go to my next stop, Prague.

Lots of impressive historical buildings and wonderful scenery Matt. How interesting and educational all this travelling is for you. Still two months to go. Good on you. You must have known something as a five year old with your interest in all the different flags of the world.
