We headed north to Pondicherry, which turned out to be quite a dissapointment. After being in the city we thought it would be nice to head to the coast.
Our attempts to get a waterfront guesthouse floundered, and we realised that maybe we had finally hit the tourist trail, as places were a lot busiser - even booked out, which was a first. We found a little spot with a verandah which was nice.
Unlike Mooloolahbah or the esplanade in say Cairns, there wasn't much development along the waterfront in Pondicherry at all.
Pondicherry has a fairly distinct French influence, there were some nice buildings around, and some gorgoeus old heritage style hotels and restaurants (all a bit out of our price range)
As the French seem to flock to places they influenced, the place was a little overrun by "yuppie" hippies, sipping their lattes then off to yoga class. All in all, our coffee and crosiant at the local bakery was an interesting exercise in people watching. It almost seemed a prerequite for all the girls to be wearing the loose clothes and scarves, same with the guys.
Outside town is Auroville, a commune set up by a guru. Not really feeling in touch with our spiritual side to that extent, we chose not to visit, and planned our journey further up the coast to Mamallapurum which looked a little more interesting.
We took a nice day trip to a fort see pics....sorry can't remember the name.

The fort (lots of steps)
