You know you might be getting above your traveling skills when the first thing you see from the airplane in a new country is anto aircraft guns but as wee were taxing into colombo airport thats what we saw - matt risked life and limb to get a photo - supposidly the tamil tigers have managered to get themselves some planes and bomb military places in Sri Lanka.

To put it midly Nic was not impressed that I had dragged her here .

However, we have safely arrived in Sri Lanka and I am writing from Kandy. Though, our problems came trying to leave Bangkok, the airline wouldn't let us board without an onward ticket. Now Sri Lankan Immigration does in theory need this, but it is rarely inforced. So, the airline has to protect itself cause if we weren't allowed into Sri Lanka, they would be fined etc. Sri Lanka was our stop over to get our Indian Visa, so we booked a flight with enough time for that through the same company (which we had already looked into on the net, and were probably going to do anyway). Just our luck that there is a period from the 18-26 when they don't fly, so the 17th it was.

We had a nice flight with "Mihin Lanka" a low cost airline of Sri Lanka (supposedly the government subsidises it so more tourists come), it was about 1/2 the price of Sri Lankan air. The plane was only 1/3 full and over the 4 hr flight, on which were the only whities, it was nice to spread out, and the group a few rows up from us had a game of cards going in the aisle.

Of course when we arrived in Colombo airport, with the said anti-aircraft guns aimed at the skies ( to shot the tamil tigers of course), we walked straight through immigration and without any hesitation we were given our visa without a so much as how long will your stay be ???

We weren't too keen on spending the night in Colombo, so we made a couple of quick calls to the Indian High Commision to check about the Visa situation and headed to Kandy that night. Just our luck, it was a public holiday the next day, and we wouldn't be able to submit the visa until Monday. The Visa takes 5 days, and our flight is on Saturday - it will be a tight call...but not impossible.

The people couldn't have been more helpful, and we headed to the bus terminal, and then in no time were on an air con express mini bus headed for Kandy. We got talking on the bus to an editor of a local english newspaper, and he took us under his wing. As we would arrive in Kandy about 10pm, he was worried we would get ripped off by the tuk tuk drivers, he said just a few days previuously he had been. He called the place he was staying to check they had a room, which they did when he said we were foreigners (they don't take young Sri Lanka couples in case they are running away from home), and even to put dinner away for us. It was a great end to a long day.
