It was time for sightseeing as husband and wife; Mr and Mrs Mathew Waters. We had a busy couple of days, but still managed an afternoon siesta most days to escape the heat and humidity.
As the photos show we saw Wat Pho with it's reclining Buddha, Grand palace with it's emerald (which is really jade) Buddha, Ko San road and surrounds, forts, democracy monument, golden mount, gold Buddha, china town, JJ market, royal barge museum, hospital museum, Siam square etc. etc. The hospital museum was particulary gorey and at the same time interesting, we saw a collection of conjoined twins in jars and a forensic investigation section showing pics of victims, bullets and stabed organs in jars.....all in all a bit different and a change from the temples etc.
Bangkok has a surprisingly good public transport system. We most enjoyed traveling on the river by boat, especially at night. We avoided the tuk tuks though, as cute as they are as our taxi driver assured us, they are about double the price of a taxi and are only cooled by the polluted Bangkok air.
The food in Thailand so far has been sooo yummy. All our favourites from home and more, all really cheap, so long as you get at least a street away from touristy areas. Pad thai, soups, green curry, red curry, mussaman curry, and some things we don't even know the name of. Also, there are fresh fruit and juice stalls on every corner which are perfect on a hot day. Added to the thai food is international cuisine, we had some good blue cheese and roast beef baguettes just the other day for just over $3 a piece.
We did a little shopping, Matt contemplated buying a Nintendo DS again, a cartel he concluded when every shop had the same price.......but we left empty handed. The shopping centre at Siam has to be seen to be believed. A highlight for the boys are the car dealerships on the 3rd floor, I guess the guys need to be entertained while the wives shop. But there was to be no Maseratti or Ferrari to be taken home for us that day.
So, we are now about to say goodbye to Bangkok and take in a few places surrounding the city in a bit of a loop, including the infamous "bridge over the river kwai", then we are taking a flight from bangkok to Myanmar/Burma. We picked up the Myanmar visas the other day with no problems, after I counseled matt on the fact it wouldn't be a funny idea to write journalist under the occupation section on the visa application form.
We hope that you are all well. We love hearing from you, so please email soon - we do get a little lonely, and it is nice to have email. Lol Matt and Nicole Waters.
