The main reason people come he is for the history that you can see. Melaka was a part of the East India Trading Company and has therefore been influenced by the English, China and the Dutch. Again this provides a lot of variety in the city (via the buildings) but more importantly the food is great.
We have sampled a bit of everything including Indian ($2 a dish), Chinese and Malay. It seems I'm getting more excited about the food than the sites. To be honest China town is the same as the china towns we have seen a million times before and the temples -ditto me thinks we are getting a bit tired of temples and we are only 5 weeks into this trip
One thing that was cool and is not in the trusty book is the Customs museum and too be honest we only went into because it was free and it had great AC but it was a hidden gem
06 the church were st francis of xavier was buried
. It showed all the things customs had confiscated at the port and showed how they did it - all well and good but than came all the 'indecent material' they had piles of porn and sex toys all lined up and on spinning trays it was quiet funny. The indecent statutes i.e. the nude ones had been covered to protect any poor Malay from seeing something they shouldn't All in all its certainly a nice town, we are staying at a cool hostel that seems to have a reggae theme and our host I think has smoked a bit too much in her younger years and is paying for it now, but shes cool - in a kooky way.
Tomorrow we are off to KL for a few days to prepare ourselves for some more trekking through forests - nic can't wait
