Byron Bay is one of those rare places in the world where you find both mountains and perfect beaches. Here the expansive sweep of white sand meets turquoise waters, flanked by the dramatic peaks and rises of the Great Dividing Range. It's one of the most exquisite settings on earth, one worthy of poetry or cheesy song lyrics.

But like all painfully beautiful places, it cannot and has not remained hidden away from the tourist hordes, and I find myself now in a bustling town full of backpackers from all over the world, much larger and busier than the one I used to know some twelve years ago (wow, I am getting old!).

See, this used to my hideaway from the tourist Mecca of the Gold Coast. It was here that I came to get away from the invaders from the south and the Schoolies that took over the streets from September to March each year. Back then the "ferals" still ruled the streets in Byron and the local hippy community put a stop to the likes of Club Med setting up their resorts in their quaint little town.

However, the allure of the dollar eventually won out and Byron is today much larger, much busier and much more expensive. That’s not to say it’s any worse for it, just different. While I am disappointed at the changes, I am pleased to see that they’ve at least learned from the mistake of the Gold Coast and avoided building high rise monstrosities that completely block out any sun on the beach from four in the afternoon, which helps Byron hold on to it’s beauty.

But I'll let the pictures and video speak for itself from here. Enjoy…

And be jealous.
