After a few more long bus rides up the coast and a quick stop in rainy Rio we headed off to our next beach town 3 hours outside of Rio--Buzios. When reading our Lonely Planet description about Buzios we had been concerned about visiting there this time of year. They said that between Christmas and Carnival in February the population of Buzios increases from 8,000 to 100,000. And it does, but it was fantastic!

We were very excited to head to Buzios most of all because we were going there with Matt's brother Jesse and his girlfriend Shannon. It was a wonderful time getting to know Shannon for the first time and be with people we care about. We are missing home and it was a much needed break to be with family. Our days consisted mostly of heading to the beach in Jesse's rented beach buggy car (picture Scooby Doos car), playing fresco ball on the beach (think lifesize ping pong but without a net and with a raquetball instead), boogie boarding, and basically louging around Jesse and Shannon in Buzios

. At night we would order huge pizzas in town (literally called 'gigante' in portugese) and wander around the town exploring. Everyone is out LATE in Buzios, and countless shops were packed full of people well after midnight.

Some other fun memories from our time here was finding cheap and delicious snacks (churros and acai, an amazon fruit that blends into a great smoothie), Jesse learning to kite surf, and watching Shannon actually doing it amazingly well.

After leaving Jesse and Shannon, we went to two more smaller towns, Arraial do Cabo and Saquerema, both were supposed to be really pretty and have some good surf (we were now hooked on boogie boarding). They were nice beach areas, but didn't really compare with Buzios, so 3 days later we found ourselves back in Buzios for 3 more days of hanging out and boogie boarding on two of our favorite beaches there, Brava and Geriba!
